Get into free gigs and get free CDs!

In exchange all we ask you to do some flyering, post the odd bulletin on the internet and check out stores to have a look at their stock.

Here’s how it works:

1. Send us an email to street.team@properdistribution.co.uk letting us know a bit about yourself (see FAQs below).

2. We’ll get back to you with details about what gigs are coming up, you get back to us telling us you definitely want to do it.

3. We send you some flyers in the post.

4. You go to the gigs, enjoy yourself and hand out some flyers.

5. Let us know how you got on at the gig (ie roughly how many flyers you got rid of, general response from people, any other interesting things).

6. We also send out bulletins every now and then which we ask you to help us publicise to your friends, be it through social networking or emailing your friends.  If you can show us you’ve done this, you get free CDs.

7. Every now and again we will ask you to check your local record stores or venues to see if they are stocking the things we send them.

8. We might ask you to do a live review of a gig you went to and post it up on our blog.

Frequently asked questions

Q. “Free stuff?  What’s the catch?”

A. The catch is you have to spend about 20 minutes outside a venue handing out flyers.  It might be raining so you might want to take an umbrella.  If you think this is an unreasonable demand for getting into a gig for free for a band you want to see then this could be considered a catch.

Q. “This sounds too good to be true!  What’s in it for you?”

A. Our thinking is that if you bombard enough of the right people with the right info, hand out enough of the right flyers to the right people etc. sooner or later someone’s going to buy a CD.  We’d do it ourselves but we can’t be everywhere at once, so we’re recruiting people from all over the country to help us out.

Q. “So what does your company (Proper Music Distribution) do then?”

A. We offer services to record labels.  The most obvious service, as you’d be led to believe by the name, is physical and digital distribution, ie delivering CDs to shops (independent record stores, HMV etc) and digitally distributing to online retailers like iTunes etc.  But we also cover advertising and marketing, promo duplication and we publish our own magazine called Properganda.  We currently work with over 500 record labels, so deal with more artists than you can shake a stick at.

Q. “So you can get me into any gig I want to get into?”

A. Nope.  Our jurisdiction only covers the artists that we distribute (visit our tour page to find out which of our artists are currently touring), although any folk/country/world/blues/jazz fan will be impressed by how many artists we cover.  Every now and again though our remit will extend to related artists that we don’t work with (the likes of Seth Lakeman, The Levellers etc).

Also, although in most cases we can get you into the gigs we can’t guarantee it’ll happen every time; sometimes guest lists can be very limited or a gig very popular but we can usually arrange for you and a friend to get in.

Furthermore we don’t arrange places for smaller venues as they fewer tickets and are more reliant upon the sales.

Q. “How do you know I’ve done the work?”

A. A couple of ways: firstly we ask you to email us a small report, simply stating roughly how many flyers you’ve given away (we don’t expect you to sit there and count through them all though) and what the general response to you was (ie whether people were interested in what you were flyering for or not).  Also the promoters / tour managers who put your names on the guest list are at these gigs so they can tell us whether you were there or not.

Q. “Is this a paid job?  Do I need to sign a contract?”

A. No and no, this is a voluntary task.  The scheme is designed for music fans who would be going to gigs anyway, except instead of paying £10-£15 for a ticket they do about 20 minutes worth of flyering at the end of the gig.  The advantage of this is that you can be as much a part of or as little as you like and you can work it round your existing commitments.

Q. “Is there a quota of gigs I need to attend?”

A. Nope, you can go to as many or as few as you like.  The scheme is very flexible and designed to fit around your life, not the other way round.

Q. “OK, that’s the free gigs covered.  What about free CDs?  How do I get them?”

A. There are a few ways: if you flyer round places like cafés, libraries etc where there normally are no flyers; if you flyer at a gig which isn’t one of our artists and you have paid to get in (as long as it’s appropriate); by getting a friend to join the street team; doing some internet publicity; or doing anything else I haven’t asked you to do which makes me think that you’re a clever person.

Q. “What sort of internet publicity do you want us to do?”

A. Every now and then we’ll send you some information to email to your friends or post on social networking sites like myspace, facebook or any blog that you run.  We will send you all the relevant coding and suchlike, so if you’re scared of the techy stuff then worry not.  If you can show us you’ve done this (eg we can see you’ve posted a blog/bulletin on myspace or send us a link to your blog) you get free CDs.

Q. “How do I sign up?”

A. Drop us an email at street.team@properdistribution.co.uk letting us know:

i) your address (so we can send you some flyers and our free magazine Properganda to distribute at your favourite venues and so we can send you presents),
ii) your phone number (so we can contact you if we get any last minute news about tonight’s gig),
iii) venues you frequent,
iv) any other information we might find interesting; if you’re willing to help us out we want to get to know you!
Rest assured that we do not pass on your details to anyone else.

Q. If I join the street team am I more likely to get signed by you, so I get distributed by you and my records become available in the shops?

A. No, you have to contact us via our website for that.

Q. Why do street team members seem to have strange names?

A. Shhhh!  It’s a secret.  If you want to find out more you’ll have to email me.

Q. “Erm…I’m still unsure.  Can I email you some more questions?”

A. Yes, please do.

Q. “What do I do if I want to leave the street team?”

A. You can’t.  Once you’ve signed up we own your soul.

Q. “Really?”

A. No, just kidding.  Just send us an email letting us know why you’d like to leave and we’ll take you off.

Q. “I’ve emailed you but heard nothing back.  Don’t you like me?”

A. Yes, we really like you!  Unfortunately, some email programs think we’re trying to increase the size of something other than your record collection, so please check your bulk box.  We do reply to EVERY inquiry.

If you have any more queries, please don’t hesitate to contact us on street.team@properdistribution.co.uk

A hen and a half lay an egg and a half in a day and a half, half a crown; how long does it take a duck to lay a ten foot plank?

I saw Amy LaVere in Aberdeen last month supporting Seasick Steve. She was brilliant and the band were superb. Steve Selvidge (son of) is a superb guitarist and very modest about his abilities. I only wish she was playing a bit nearer (300 mile round trip on a December evening is not on unfortunately). I would advise any person who lives in the vicinity of one of the gigs next week to go because the music is superb, she is lovely as well as having a great voice and stage aura, the band are wonderful. You won’t be disappointed. And buy the 2 albums after the gig as well because they are both excellent

I think you’ve stuck that on the wrong post but yes, Amy and her backing band are brilliant.
