Competition

A box o' CDs

A box o' CDs

Hello!  I’ve got a box of CDs next to me that need to be won, pictured.  Please note though that i’m not giving away my keyboard and mouse, as otherwise i won’t be able to use my computer, hence won’t be able to run any more competitions.

The reason we have these to give away is because they are the sole survivors of a massive clear-out of our promo rack we had a couple of weeks ago.

So to enter our competition, all you have to do is answer this question:

Some of our readers will be familiar with Bellowhead, a folk band that has eleven people in it that look like this:

One of the Proper promo racks

One of the Proper promo racks

Once more our promo racks are bursting to the seams (well, joints) with the hundreds of promos we get sent from the record labels we distribute.

Part of what we do here at Proper involves us sending out promo CDs to journalists, radio DJs, gig promoters and other industry-related peoples but sometimes a surplus builds up as we deal with so many releases.  So every now and then we offer you the chance to win some of these CDs.  This is one of those occasions!  So to enter the competition, answer this question: (more…)

Seventy Years of Topic RecordsTopic Records, home of such distinguished traditional artists as Martin Carthy, Dick Gaughan, June Tabor, Pete Seeger, Ewan McColl, Nic Jones and a bucketload more are, as we’ve mentioned before, celebrating their 70th Anniversary this year.

There are some super celebratory gigs occuring in London as a result and you could win yourself a pair of tickets to them.  Head over to the Three Score & Ten Website to be greeted with details of the giveaway.

(Frankly, in terms of posing a question, i think they’ve totally ripped us off.  That and the email address you have to send the answer to.)

Not for the first time this year, we are giving away tickets to Off the Tracks Festival in Donington!  But unlike the previous Off the Tracks Festival we gave tickets away to earlier this year, this one happens not in May but in September, specifically Friday 14th to Sunday 16th.

This time round the acts include Transglobal Underground, Shooglenifty, Osibisa, Rory McLeod, Ezio, 6 Day Riot and a bucketload more.  We’re talking a big bucket here.

For a chance to win a pair of tickets all you need to do is answer the imminent question correctly, provided you are 18 years of age or over, resident in the UK, able to attend the festival should you win the competition and can provide your address if you win.  You’ll also need to wear a pink fluffy hat to the festival (well, the last one’s optional.  It’s more of a suggestion).

So the question: Transglobal Underground are playing Off the Tracks Festival, but which of these cities has not been proven to have an underground rail system?

a) London
b) Paris
c) Atlantis

Send your answer to competition@properonline.co.uk with the subject header as “The wrong kind of water”.  We must receive your entry by 5 of the clock on Friday 31st July 2009.

The Tower of London, also known as Her Majesty’s Royal Palace and Fortress, is a place synonymous with incarceration, execution and torture.  So what better place to host a ten-day music festival, The Tower Festival?

A Beefeater

A Beefeater

The festival takes place from Thu 10th until Sun 20th September this year (2009).  Amongst the performers will be Nigel Kennedy, Leslie Garret and Dame Kiri Te Kanawa as well as performances of Gilbert & Sullivan’s The Yeoman of the Guard and a celebration of Mile’s Davis’s Kind of Blue on its 50th anniversary.

Another Beefeater

But as well as all of this WOMAD are putting on a pair of days over the second weekend (Sat 19th & Sun 20th).  Amongst the acts will be The Imagined Village, Tony Allen, Justin Adams & Juldeh Camarah, Khaled, Abdullah Chhadeh & Syriana, Nathan Flutebox Lee and others.

It is to these two days that we have a pair of tickets to give away, worth £65 each.  But how do I win these tickets, i hear you ask.  Well, i reply, you must be 18 or over to enter the competition and resident in the UK.  You must also be able to attend the event and will need to provide your address, should you be lucky enough to win the tickets.  You also need to answer this question correctly:

Which of these is a person who was executed at The Tower of London?

a) Anne Boleyn

b) Anne Joggeyn

c) Anne Skieyn

Send your answer to competition@properonline.co.uk with the subject header as “Decapitation’s what you need” and make sure you include your name and daytime telephone number.  The competition closes at 5pm BST on Fri 24th July 2009.

The correct answer was, of course, a) Anne Boleyn.  Her marriage to King Henry VIII, prompting the king to get divorced from his previous wife Catherine of Aragon and subsequently excommunicated, splitting the UK state from the Catholic Church.  This led to the English Reformation, a fascinating subject too involved for me to go into detail about here.

You can look up some of the other competitions we’ve got currently running by clicking here.

There seems to be some dispute as to whether Purbeck in Dorset is an isle or a peninsula, even with talk of it being an island.  Either way, the geological classification is of no consequence to whether there are any good festivals happening there, which there are.

Purbeck Folk FestivalPurbeck Folk Festival this year happens from Friday 4th to Sunday 6th September, with a line-up featuring Jim Moray, Mawkin:Causley, Uiscedwr, Snapdragons, Sam Carter and oodles more.

Tickets are great value, and slightly cheaper if you order before 31st July.  But let’s try winning the competition first…

(Entrants must be 18 or over, resident in the UK and available to go to the festival if they win.  They will also be required to provide an address if they win)

Purbeck is home to the Jurassic Coast, so called because of the geological treasures hidden in the rock which date back to the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous eras.  But, according to science, which landmass would the present Jurassic Coast have been on during the Jurassic era?

a) Laurasia
b) Gondwana
c) There’s no such thing as the Jurassic era, the Earth is only 10,000 years old.

Send the answer you suspect to be correct to competition@properonline.co.uk along with a daytime contact number and with the subject header as “The Fall of Pangea”.  The competition closes at 5 of the clock Post Meridian, British Summer Time on Thursday 16th July 2009 Anno Domini/Common Era.

This competition is now closed

The correct answer was, of course, a) Laurasia.

About 170 million years ago Pangea, the most recent supercontinent, split into two large continents, Laurasia and Gondwana.  Laurasia was the northern section, comprising of what is now North America, Europe and Asia.  Gondwana was the southern one, comprising of what is now South America, Africa, Antartica, India and Australia.

Continental shifts are very much a cyclic process; it’s hypothesised that if you were standing on land about a billion years ago you’d have been on the supercontinent Rodinia; about 1.5 billion years ago you would been on Columbia; Kenorland, Ur and Vaalbara are also previous supercontinents.

Here is a picture of what someone thinks the landmasses of the earth will look like 250 million years from now:

This has been dubbed Pangaea Ultima, although this is a term i dislike as it suggests that it will be the last time it happens.

Anyway, you can find out about more of our current competitions by clicking here.

Dub Colossus is a project headed by Nick Page, also known as Count Dubulah, famed for his work with Trans-Global Underground and Temple of Sound.  He recorded sessions with musicians in Addis Ababa, capital of Ethiopia and generally considered the birthplace of the human race, and brought the tracks back to the UK to Real World Studios for mixing.

They are playing a show in Dingwalls, Camden on Wednesday 8th July.  Wanna go?  For free?  And win a copy of their EP as well?

We have two pairs of each of the above to give away!  That’s right, 2 pairs of gig tickets, 2 pairs of EPs and 2 pairs of T-Shirts!  But entrants must be 18 or over, live in the UK and be able to attend the gig if they win.  They must also be able to answer this question correctly:

Which of these messianic figures hails from Ethiopia and is the figurehead of the Rastafari movement?

a) Haile Selassie
b) Guatama Buddha
c) Chuck Norris

Sent your answer to competition@properonline.co.uk with the subject header as “Chuck Norris can touch MC Hammer”.  Be sure to include your name and a daytime telephone number.  Make sure you’re quick though – the competition closes at 12 noon BST on Monday 6th July.

(The Chuck Norris gag wasn’t mine, i got it from here)

This competition is now closed

The correct answer was, of course, Haile Selassie, believed (or known) by Rastafari to be the living God.  Guatama Buddha is an incorrect spelling of Gautama Buddha, the spiritual leader who founded Buddhism.  Chuck Norris was a kung fu guy.

But don’t worry, you can find out more about our current competitions by clicking here.
