A host of awesome releases are unleashed this day, including:
Sharon Shannon’s new studio album includes several newly penned tracks by the accordion maestro herself and boasts a hoard of special guests including Imelda May, Jerry Fish, Carol Keogh (Automata), Justin Adams (Robert Plant Band), Jack the Rapper, The Waterboys and introducing the mighty Cartoon Thieves. One of her instrumentals, Cape Clear, features in new Neil Jordan movie ONDINE in which Sharon stars as herself alongside Colin Farrell. This will be premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in September 2009.
Ever since the release of Mazzy Star’s debut album She Hangs Brightly, Hope Sandoval has defined the sound and style of Californian psychedelic dream pop, her natural beauty and trademark sultry vocals on songs such as Fade Into You and Into Dust (currently soundtracking a Virgin Mobile TV and cinema campaign) helping to make her a modern day music icon.
Having collaborated in recent years with acts such as The Chemical Brothers, Massive Attack, Air, Jesus & Mary Chain, Death In Vegas and Bert Jansch, the revered singer finally returns with her long awaited post-Mazzy Star sophomore album, Through The Devil Softly, in partnership with Colm Ó Cíosóig of My Bloody Valentine.
Rio’s original nu-bossa star Sabrina Malheiros returns with a deluxe version of her 2008 summer smash. With an all new track listing featuring four reworks, including two stunning versions of Brisa Mar and New Morning from the don of modern jazz and bossa Nicola Conte – standing alongside his finest work. With the addition of the previously unreleased jazz dance track Gingar De Amor, this beautiful modern bossa electric album flows effortlessly.
Songwriter for a generation of young Brazilians, Malheiros delivers an album of golden era bossa-soul, samba, disco and house, to capture the vibe of modern bossa nova. With skilful re-mastering, new artwork, extensive and revealing sleeve notes and photos from Sabrina as well as Portuguese and translated English lyrics, the ‘Deluxe Edition’ perfectly complements these gorgeous sounds of Brazilian summer.
Megafaun are part of that rare crop of young artists driven by an unquenchable thirst for a wide range of sounds and styles. Pick a song at random, and you’ll hear delicate Appalachian banjo figures, tumbling Steve Reich pianos, sumptuous multi-part harmonies or bracing, string-scraping dissonance. That everything fits together in the context of a beautiful thirteen-track suite is evidence of the unique mixture of the songcraft and improvisational spirit that Megafaun have grown to command.
The band has performed over 250 shows in the US since ‘07 and has collaborated with new Crammed labelmates Akron/Family, with minimalist composer Arnold Dreyblatt and more.
